OMAHA, Neb. -- Dozens of minors were caught drinking at a party late Monday night, 110th and Jones street, police said.
Authorities said 43 underaged drinkers were at a home of a 16-year-old boy who said his parents were out of town.
The teen said his party got out of hand when uninvited upperclassmen showed up with alcohol.
"Half of them just busted in the party and it got really out of control," the teen said.
The city prosecutor said whoever brought the booze will pay dearly.
The teen is facing criminal charges, including procuring alcohol for a minor and marijuana possession.
"There were drugs in my house that I did not know about. There was paraphernalia that I did not know about in my house," the teen said. "None of the alcohol was supplied from me. I didn't give anyone alcohol or anything."
Authorities said they still have to find out who bought the liquor.
"In a case with this many kids, where it multiplies the risk so much, it carries potentially up to 43 years in jail," city prosecutor Marty Conboy said.
Conboy said minors are both defendants and victims in cases like this, and they also often serve as witnesses. He said providing alcohol to minors is a serious crime, one that could have had deadly consequences.
"All 43 of those kids don't live in that house. They're going to drive home or ride home with someone that did go there and party. That's where we get the traffic tragedies," Conboy said.
The 43 teens who were cited with minor in possession each face up to 90 days in jail and can lose their driver's license.

Both 43 years for bringing the booze and 90 days in jail for having a drink seems way too harsh.
The kids should of done drugs instead of drinking. They would of got in less trouble.
The teen said his party got out of hand when uninvited upperclassmen showed up with alcohol.
The "upperclassmen" are also minors. Whoever sold them the alcohol or bought it for them should be in prison. If the "upperclassmen" used fake ID to purchase alcohol then they should be sentenced for it, along with supplying alcohol to other minors.
"All 43 of those kids don't live in that house. They're going to drive home or ride home with someone that did go there and party. That's where we get the traffic tragedies," Conboy said.

Yes, the kids did wrong by buying the beer. Don't you think 43 years in prison is a bit excessive? Most people don't get that much time for rape or killing someone.

I do think 43 years is a lot excessive. I don't feel that anyone will or should receive that amount of prison time over this violation. I do think that the teenagers and public should be acquainted with the possible penalties that could be imposed. If adults bought the liquor then I am not adverse to seeing them spend a year or two in prison.
However, death is more excessive. I lost a 17 year old high school friend due to a teenage drinking and driving incident. Two 14 year olds were also killed in the wreck. The 21 year old driver survived and wound up in a wheel chair for the rest of his life.
